Owensville Senior Center holding garage sale to support operations

Owensville Senior Center is holding a garage sale Thursday and Friday, Aug. 1-2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Recently donated household items, clothes, furniture, and more will be available for purchase by donation.

Money raised will support the center’s homebound and congregate meal programs and other activities. Although they receive funding from their partner, Aging Best, Senior Center Administrator Sharon Nowack told The Republican on Tuesday that they have to raise approximately $50,000 to $60,000 additionally each year to maintain their operations.

The Owensville Senior Center currently has 45 homebound clients. Costs of this program are $1,500 per person or $67,500 per year. “It allows them to stay in their home, rather than going to a long-term facility, and gives them one nutritious meal a day,” said Nowack regarding the homebound program.

Homebound clients also receive other food goods such as bread, juice and milk.

The congregate program allows seniors to visit the center between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to enjoy an appetizer, entree, dessert and a drink for a suggested donation of $5 per meal for those 60 and older and for those under 60, a $7 donation to cover costs.

Nowack stresses that the program is not income-based, but rather age-based. “It doesn’t matter if you have a million dollars or you have nothing — you are welcome to come join,” Nowack said. “When you turn 60, there’s a hidden gem down here.”

Those seeking to make a monetary donation to the senior center can do so by stopping by the location at 214 North First Street during their open hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by visiting them online at facebook.com/OwensvilleSeniorCenter.

They also have a wish list of needed supplies posted in the dining room, which may include cake mixes, ketchup, or other items, and also accept items that can be given away as prizes during bingo and other activities. For more informatio, call 437-3096.
