Gasconade man faces multiple charges following roof-top standoff

GASCONADE – A Gasconade man was taken into custody on Aug. 27 following a six-hour standoff -– but not before he struggled with law enforcement officers, according to Gasconade County Sheriff Scott Eiler.

Danny Holloway attempted to avoid deputies last Thursday by hiding on the roof of a Gasconade residence. Holloway was named in an arrest warrant that county deputies and Lake Area Narcotic Enforcement Group (LANEG) officers served.

The incident began after officers observed a man believed to be Holloway arriving at a residence in the 100 block of Oak Street. Eiler said his deputy tried to talk to the man, who refused to answer or comply with the commands. The deputy heard the man walking through the residence and apparently getting into the rafters portion of the house.

At that point, more sheriff’s deputies, the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) and Gasconade City Marshal Riley Lewis arrived at the residence, setting up a perimeter. The sheriff said deputies were unsuccessful in communicating with Holloway.

Eiler obtained a telephone number for the owner of the residence, who gave the sheriff permission to enter the house. Deputies and K9 officer Xena entered the residence, and Holloway fled to the roof where he threatened to jump off if an attempt was made to take him into custody, the sheriff said.

Deputies and an MSHP negotiator attempted to talk with Holloway for about six hours in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully. Holloway refused to come down from the roof unless his demands were met.

Eiler eventually decided to reduce the number of law enforcement personnel at the scene in an effort to coax Holloway off the roof. With most of the deputies away from the residence, Holloway came down and was taken into custody, but not before briefly struggling with law enforcement officers. One deputy was injured, apparently in the struggle, and was treated at Hermann Area District Hospital, the sheriff said.

Holloway was taken to Mercy Hospital Washington for medical treatment and then booked into the Franklin County Jail.

The sheriff said his department will be asking the Gasconade County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for additional charges against Holloway, including resisting arrest and assault of a law enforcement officer.

Eiler formally recognized the efforts of his deputies, LANEG, MSHP, Marshal Lewis, the Rosebud Police Department, Osage County Sheriff’s Department, the Hermann Fire Department and Hermann Area Ambulance District for their assistance during the standoff. He also extended his appreciation to Gasconade County Communications’ Enhanced-911 dispatching staff during the incident.

The sheriff particularly expressed his appreciation and thanks to the residents of the City of Gasconade and members of the Hermann Fire Department for providing water to law enforcement personnel during the standoff, which took place in 90-plus degree heat.
