County sales taxes continue strong showing

HERMANN — For the fourth consecutive month and the seventh of the first nine months of the year, Gasconade County’s General Fund Sales Tax generated six figures of revenue, pushing the county’s primary source of income closer to another record level.

County Treasurer Mike Feagan Thursday morning reported to the County Commission that September’s General Fund Sales Tax check from the state came in at $111,797 — the largest amount received in any of the first nine months.

The September amount pushed the county’s total for the year to $933,844, which is $19,966 more than the total received at this point a year ago. The 2023 total General Fund Sales Tax amount was $1,228,290. That was the fourth consecutive record amount of General Fund Sales Tax revenue received in a calendar year.

“We did well this month,” Feagan said during last week’s Commission session. Referring to the number of $100,000-plus months, he added, “That’s pretty amazing.”

The largest monthly reimbursement check ever received by the county came in December of 2022 at $113,483.

Meanwhile, the county’s Use Tax — the sales tax applied primarily to online purchases made from out-of-state retailers — is expected to provide another major portion of the county’s revenue by year’s end. However, the 1.325-cent tax check slipped significantly from the amount received in August. This month’s amount is $31,335 — compared to $59,504 received last month.

Still, through the first nine months of the year, the Use Tax has generated $431,754. The total for all of last year was $535,723, which means with three more checks yet to be received the tax should hit a new mark. The Use Tax was approved in April 2021 and became effective Oct. 1 of that year. In the first full year it was collected, 2022, the Use Tax generated $237,081.

The half-cent Law Enforcement Sales Tax (LEST) also produce a big number in September. The $78,629 received this month is the second-largest monthly payment of the year, trailing the $79,428 received in June. That’s also the largest amount received since the tax was approved by voters in April of 2022 and the start of collection in October of 2022.

So far this year, LEST has generated $866,776. The revenue is divided 75 percent-25 percent between the county Sheriff’s Department and the five municipal police departments in the county. Thus far, the cities have shared $216,619 while the county has received $649,857.

The total amount generated by the tax last year was $1,128,604.

The Commission also received a breakdown of how this month’s LEST revenue has been allocated to the five cities participating in the revenue-sharing program. Owenvsille – $12,056, year-to-date total of $99,644; Hermann – $9,435, $77,982; Bland – $2,096; $17,329; Rosebud – $1,834, $15,163; Gasconade – $786, $6,498.
